DOUGLAS TRUMBULL, A PIONEER’S PATH!

Filmmaker, engineer, inventor, special effects master etc Douglas Trumbull
has created Showscan Digital where he’s developing a 120fps system that he’s hoping takes grab within the thick iron walls of the film industry. Mr Trumbol is an innovator, and he’s forging mightily towards his vision of the future of filmmaking. Long ago, I did research at Showscan labs on temporal influence on the brain, so it’s nice to see him still pushing new technologies today. What’s also awesome, is in the second video. A unique approach to the 3D lens system that frees operators from the “L” or side by side rigs in current use. Now that’s in my opinion the way 3D technology will converge into for lensing in the near future.

IN ((((( STEREO ))))) WHERE AVAILABLE!

” The way of the future“.. – A line Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes repeats over an over again from Martin Scorsese’s Aviator. A mantra I too keep hearing in my own head lately when it comes to stereo cinematography. It’s a very appropriate line though for this reemerging technology. The process is not new in the history of photography, however the technology landscape around it has changed considerably; and this has given stereo cinematography the ability to survive this time. I’m behind any type of cinematography approach, as well anything that brings us closer to the story or content. When the glasses are gone and the panels are stereo generic, 3d will make a truly lasting arrival. We spend our eye’s opening moments since birth seeing in stereo, why should visual art mediums be anything different. Stereo visual capture is a natural progression in the evolution of the visual arts, such as cinematography. The technology requires much more discipline though, however that goes with any major leap in technology. We must learn the art, the language of stereo cinematography. This is a technology to embrace, and not fear, as it will be one of those significant jumps when looking back in the history of cinema; as well others visual artistic mediums. ” The way of the future“?, well the future yes, however not the present, as we are are in the infancy stage in stereo cinematography and this is the current era of the jalopy equivalent. However, I’m sure we will be at the wheel of a sports car in the near future after major improvements that bring 3d to match the stereo our eyes capture and brain processes. Only then will it truly become transparent and fully accepted across the whole spectrum of entertainment and media.

Side note- I’ve been doing Stereo Cinematography testing lately. The following were shot with an IO of 3.5”, so there’s the associated image issues and characteristics from this. There very crude tests, however I’m pleased considering. Of course there’s a new set of procedures that are required; however It’s well worth it in the end. These frames are all converted to anaglyph and require the red/cyan glasses to see them in stereo. Otherwise they will be distorted and Non-3D.

CAMERON & BAY IN A 3D WORLD.

James Cameron & Michael Bay discuss 3D at Paramount Studios as well Preview 20 minutes of footage from the latest Transformers film. It was Cameron that convinced bay to shoot 3D. I’m quite surprised, since Bay had strong reservations on adapting the technology to his style of shooting. The article goes on to say “On stage, Bay and Cameron squabbled like two old hens over the format, Cameron its ever-faithful defendor while Bay kvetched at the technical issues and headaches.” However in the end Bay went 3D; and it appears it worked for this project. Were such in the infancy of this technology that how it will be in the future will make this technology in the present feel like a jalopy. Stereography ( 3D ) is here to stay, whether we like it or not.

WORLD WAR II AND 3D.

Today’s industry technology craze took on a whole other role 71 years ago. Before Avatar, even before filmmakers in the 50’s experimented with it, 3D was used in World War II by British intelligence. Under the code name Operation Crossbow they utilized 3D technology to assist in mapping out German territory. Article appeared on the BBC.

2001: BEYOND THE INFINITE: THE MAKING OF A MASTER PIECE SHELVED BY WARNER BROS.

When I heard about this documentary on one of the best films of all time,
I was looking forward to seeing behind the scenes that no one has had
access to other then those that worked on 2001 or were close to those
that had work on the film. The documentary by Douglas Trumbull and David Larson
appears to have been shelved and will not be released by Warner. That’s a
shame, and we can only hope that in the future it will get out. Not long ago
17 minutes of cut footage was found in a Kansas City salt-mine vault, so hopefully Warner
is considering a re-packaging of the project to coincide with this.

TECHNICOLOR CINESTYLE 5D MARK II TEST!

Here are tests done in northern CA by Marlon Torres of the
new preset co-developed by Canon and Technicolor. This is by
far the flattest curve yet. It’s obvious that technicolor had full access
to algorithms etc to get this right. So far what I’ve seen I like.
This delivers footage that is much better in post grading than previous
presets.

FRAME RATES AND TEMPORAL INFLUENCE!

Frame rates/temporal resolution play the most important factor in our perception of motion visual mediums. Many years ago I did research on temporal influence on the brain; long before electronic cameras had 24fps. At showscan I had the privilege to do research on how projected 70mm film at 60fps material vs 30fps / 24fps play a significant role on how we perceive and connect to the material we watch. The above chart gives you a simplistic example of the amount of frames per second that are captured depending on the chosen frame rate. These differences are crucial, and have a major affect on narrative films the most. I will be writing more about this topic since this is the latest major industry change to come since 3D with Peter Jackson decision to shot The Hobbit at 48FPS and James Camerons deciding to shoot in either 48FPS or 60FPS on the next Avatar.

RED,F35,ARRI-ALEXA,VIPER ETC ARE THE KINGS OF THE LAND

When shooting with these systems, it’s always a good
reminder for me why well built, and the right tools are
indispensable. With the massive DSLR requests on shoots; because people
believe that for some reason a 5DMKII etc is a RED (It’s Not!)
Look, I see the tantalizing draw to small cameras, however their
marginal at the stage their in. Years from now they will improve.
However they are not solid production camera’s, and to say so
to clients is untrue. Be honest and show the pitfalls vs others, and
if still they want to go the DSLR route. Then bang out the best from
those camera’s. That’s my approach to clients/business partners.

The world’s largest CMOS image sensor.

TOKYO- Canon Inc. announced that it has successfully
developed the world’s largest CMOS image sensor,
a size measuring 202 x 205 mm; this enables greater
light-gathering capability. The sensor is capable
of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount
of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera.

I can only imagine how this could be used for high
temporal rate 60FPS or more with enhanced Hz/temporal
frame projection applied. This would take the Showscan
experience to a whole new level of clarity married to a
120hz+ projection; this would make for some serious
experience in the theater. Of course I hope that Red
is still behind making the RED EPIC 617,
That would be truly Awesome, just thinking about it…

IS BLACK AND WHITE CINEMA DEAD?

The White Ribbon, a black and white Austrian-German film written and directed by Michael Haneke. The story is about a society and family in a village in northern Germany before World War I. Director Haneke said the film is about “the origin of every type of terrorism, be it of political or religious nature.” The White Ribbon was shot in color with digital cinema cameras; then converted to black and white. To achieve a look the filmmakers desired they used a process that creates an amazing contrast within the images from the color masters that creates whites that are very white, and blacks that are dark and deep. I love to see films in black and white, unfortunately it’s a medium that is almost completely avoided by the mainstream film industry. Black and white has fallen out of favor at least in narrative films, and that is a sad story unto itself. Maybe in time it will see a revival in the mainstream. However with 3D growing, and now the frame rate changes on the horizon, I can only see that black and white will even have a tougher time competing with technology that is trying to mimic real life as close as we see it with our own eye’s.

CANON 5DMII GETS NEW FIRMWARE

Canon keeps on surprising me with their new out
of the box approach, that goes against their previous
business model. It’s nice to see. Granted, it would
be better if they did what RED does. However that is why
RED is unique. Well one of the reasons. The list would be
long if it was fully listed. Not saying anything bad
about the current VDSLR’s, just RED is playing in a whole
other level playing field. However kudos to Canon for doing the
right thing..

I saw this statement on a filmmakers forum. I thought
I would share my response here as I posted there:

My thoughts on this…

The process is a game of torture. Who will break first. You, or the film…….
Of course, the best part of it, is seeing it work at the end, or at
least getting close to how you saw it in your mind.
I guess it’s that way for most people who strive for
the best possible results in anything. You endure the torture, for
the good results.

Anything good, never comes easy, or painless!

I Like this quote from Dorothy Parker ” I hate writing, I love having written”

If I could, and it was possible; I would just pipe the
visuals straight from my brain to a recording system. Then I could
bypass all the logistical Bullshit you need to go through to get a
film actually made. This way, the idea would be what you imagined.
Still, you would have to come up with a good story that
was compelling, or it would be boring gibberish, like a bad novel.

It wouldn’t be easy, no more than writing a novel is easy. Since this
would be pretty much the equivalent to writing a novel, just you would
be writing the story with your visual system and recording it instead
of using words to tell it.

However, like many great writers, they hated the process of writing.
They also would say, they had no choice; they had to write.
They needed to get it out of their head. The same goes for filmmakers,
musicians, painters, inventors, or any artists I believe. You need to get it out.
So you endure the torture of the process to do so, hoping you get
those happy moments along the way, while letting loose the wild
energy from your mind to another medium. What ever that medium may be………

That’s the way I see it…..I think.

Or….It’s the writing stage that I’m in at the moment, that makes me more cynical about the whole process….. Grrrr.

I think it’s the writing.

A rant just for fun, now back to real writing.

Blah this, blah that. We get what was considered top of the line
cinema tools in the not to distant past for a fraction of the
cost today; and people still complain. For god sakes shut the
hell up and stop complaining about what you don’t have, or what
is wrong with that or this. Instead, do something with what you
got, which is quite great. To use the infamous Nike line
“JUST DO IT” or shut the hell up!

BTW, this applies to all other aspects of life and people too; not just filmmaking……..

GH1- SOME FIRST THOUGHTS!

I have had the GH1 in my possession for about 7 weeks. It’s
quite amazing where cameras have come to be in a very trival amount
of time. Crazy as it sounds; this is only round one. My media server
is up and when footage is available; I will upload. Unlike the past though, this
footage is only for selected viewing by invitation only. I have not rigged the GH1
out yet. I need to design and machine a few costum parts to accomadate
my needs. BTW, having shot with the 5DMII and seen the 7D, they’re still no
where as having having the cool factor of the GH1. Motion capture still feels like
a bolted on feature on those. Where as the GH1, you know it was an equal design approach;
or at least closer to it.

Ok for fun, I had to do it. I didn’t care about optical perfection , let alone
even good performance. However out the door it starts out as a 6,720mm
lens. Then I use the GH1’s cool 2x feature, it jumps to 13,440mm’s.
Then for the hell of it , when switching to 4x mode, it s a 26,880mm lens that
simply lets you park right up a fleas ass 500 yards away. Hand holding? No
way. Maybe if you lay down in sniper position. However this setup requires
a special anti vibration tripod mount to work correctly.

Canon’s 7D announced!

Ok, so this is how the 5DMII should have been! It’s a good step. However
it’s not anywhere as well rounded as the GH1. My guess is; Canon’s Video
division is going to do that. My bets are; that when they do, it will be pretty cool.

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS BIGGER ON THE OTHER SIDE

While the cropped issue is a matter of perspective. I hear
a lot of neophytes complain or exclaim their absolute
need not to be cropped, however most of them never have
shot on anything larger than 1/3, 2/3 or maybe S16mm
image area. Funny how most Entertainment has been shot on
S35mm film negative ratios with no issues, however the wannabes or
neophytes now say, they can’t work on anything less than 36x24mm sensors
since that implementation on the 5DMII. It’s actually silly; well really silly.
I had in my hands since I was 5yrs old 120 format cameras ; so I must feel
really cropped. I find the whole subject absurd; and I want FF sensors,
however I also know that if there was only going to be APS-C approx. size
sensors, I would have zero complaints…

If your coming from, lets say:

1/3: Well that’s cropped compared to
1/2: Now that’s cropped compared to
2/3: And that’s cropped when compared to
16mm: Which is cropped when compared to
S16mm: Cropped yet again when compared to
3perf 35mm: which is getting yet again cropped compared to
35mm AA : Which is fine, however small compared to
65mm 2:20:1 : Which is all in good, however compared to
IMAX full frame : Which is gigantic, maybe, however looking small, when compared to
8×10 large format.

You get my point!

No mater how you slice it ( crop it in this case ),your
almost always smaller than something else. 🙂

THE 35MM F1.9 ANAMORPHIC TESTING.

Ok, so speed is the game. I recieved a 35mm f1.9 today. Another
70’s lens. This one is a fast lens. Of course not a Kubrick 0.9, however
F1.9 plenty good. I ran a few tests, and for anamorphic at F1.9
I can’t complain; astigmatism is there, however minor.
Sweet bokeh looks smooth as silk. Can’t wait
for real world testing. I need to fabricate a sliding bracket
mechanism to alleviate weight load, however it will suffice for now.

NEW LENS ARRIVED & CONTINUED ANAMORPHIC TESTS.

Received a mint mid 70’s 35mm f2.8 today from the east coast.
I ran a few Anamorphic tests in daylight and at night.
Shot these wide open to see worst case performance.
Interesting, and nice was the unique rainbow flare I got on the
daytime shot. Second shot was night time with a focus range
down to the inches. Makes you feel sorry for the AC’s doing
focus pulling in these ranges. I would like to try a faster
lens, something in the range of 1.2 to 1.4. However, in anamorphic
that’s suicide DOF focus ranges, not to mention the anamorphic
astigmatism etc wide open. Yes, T.4 is ideal for lens performance,
however I like using practicals to light. The FOV on this setup
is very sweet. I’m Looking forward to further testing.

IF IT DOESN’T WORK, MAKE IT WORK!

Got hold of a lens from the 70’s that optically is good, and unfortunately do
to it’s optical flange, incompatible with the camera system. Well, I didn’t like that.
So I rebuilt that damn thing, and made it compatible. The shallow focus
with the 35mm f2.8 anamorphic shot lends itself to a very nice feel.
The shot above was the first frame from this test. Now it’s time to lock the
design down and bring the tolerances to a tighter specification.

Running stress tests to see the limitations. Anamorphic can be
quite tricky. Compared to cropping it’s a pain in the ass at times

LENS FOV COMPARISON OF 28MM AND 20MM SHOT ANAMORPHIC

Testing a 20mm with the Anamorphic lens system. I’m waiting for a
$4 part to arrive from Texas so I can mount this 20mm correcty. It’s a 3.8f-stop
lens which is kinda slow in todays standard. However it’s an experiment
that has proven in preliminary results to deliver a very epic look.
Previous anamorphic test shots were 28mm F2.8 lens.

MORE ANAMORPHIC WIDE-SCREEN TEST SHOTS.

Shot with more of a warm tone. The previous tests were done to
have the ” matrix ” greenish hue. Just basic testing here.

FIRST DAY AT ANAMORPHIC WIDE SCREEN TESTING.

I did some basic testing today on a High Definition
camera mounted anamorphic system.
Shot in Newport and surrounding cities
Results were in the middle. This has more to do with
the Hi-Def camera not able to take advantage at capturing
the unique qualities offered by shooting anamorphic
optically. I’m so over basic High Definition cameras.
They are just not good at dynamic range/latitude and
are very limited at pixel density etc. Systems like Red,
Dalsa, Arri D20/21 and the likes have so much to offer,
and once you shoot in this spectrum of quality it’s
hard to go back. Today’s test were just a sample run,
so it wasn’t expected to be much more than marginal.

ANAMORPHIC LENS ARRIVES!

An anamorphic lens arrived from Sydney Australia
today. This anamorphic I have wanted to try out for years.
I love super w i d e – s c r e e n composition cinematography
and photography. Of course
anamorphic lenses and adapters have their own unique look.
It’s not about perfect sharpness, it’s about attaining a certain look
and feel. Spherical lenses will always have an edge to edge resolution
and image correctness lead over anamorphic, however it’s the look of
what your trying to attain that’s the most important goal. I’ve done
some tests as soon as it arrived, and I like the preliminary results
a lot. One thing I notice that is contrary to other reports;
there is no significant light transmission loss. I ran a light
meter through as well and with or with out lens, my f-stops and
aperture are constant. Very good news.. I will start more
extensive testing during the next few weeks.

2009 IS THE YEAR THIS FINALLY STARTS TO COME TRUE!

I’ve disliked 35mm adapters and all the nonsense associated with them. It will be nice to see these way overpriced tubes be put to rest. This is a year for transitions
for a few technologies. DSLR cinema is a leap I hoped for while- so
it’s a very enthusiastic time for I and many others that see the potential for
these new cinematography production tools.

RUMORS OF NIKON’S D400 ARE BECOMING MORE REALISTIC.

Yes we all have heard the rumors since last year of a pending Nikon D400
with Movie capture at up to 1080p 24 fps with stereo sound and a 16 million +
mega pixel CMOS to be announced at PMA or even sooner. Lets hope Nikon can
improve on the D90 with global shutter and more. If so this could be quite a
camera in the $2000.00 dollar range. It has rumored to have been spotted at
the 2009 Obama Inaugural being beta tested with all labels covered in black tape.
As well I suspect it’s 50/50 chance that Canon responds at PMA. There is talk of a
60D or Rebel upgrade. Unknown at this time. If so, they will have HD/Live View too.

CANON’S “PROFESSIONAL” IS THE PHOTOGRAPHY DIVISION INSULTING IT’S LOYAL USERS AS MANY PROCLAIM?

Many professional that have adopted the new Canon 5D Mark II into their arsenal
have had the unfortunate experience with the HD-1080P modes inability to do
true manual control. There would be no room for complaint if it wasn’t for the fact that
Canon them selves has promoted it otherwise in marketing adds, videos and placed
in the hand of pre-selected professionals to show off their new camera.

Here is a quote from Canon’s own white paper on the 5D Mark II……

Canon’s white paper quote:
“”The 1080p HDvideo recording mode represents a paradigm shift for still photographersand videographers alike, and promises to open new creative doors and commercial opportunities for advanced, professional, and fine art photographers. With it activated, photographers and video-graphers can capture high definition video with depth-of-field control found only in professional video modelsï¿½using much more affordable Canon EF lenses including fisheye, ultra-wide,and image stabilized lenses.””

Well…. I could swear I read the word professional and commercial. Hmmmm. Lets read that specific line again.

“commercial opportunities for advanced, professional”

Yep! There it is, the words ” professional & commercial “…….

I thought I was seeing things….. Come on Canon, you can do better than that!

Canon wants to play both sides depending on how there confronted on this issue with
the Mark II’s lack of manual control. They’ll call it a consumer product in one breath if
confronted about the lack of manual control. On the flip side, they go to great lengths
to make sure the camera is placed in professional circles, and used as such.
As well promoting it in their own documents as ” professional “.

Canon knows better to pull this. Reminds of that Canon marketing
phrase ( Canon Know How ). What happen? Have they lost their “know how”?
There is no excuse for this deliberate deletion of control from the
5D MARK II in the HD 1080P mode.

Oh yeah, one more thing. What makes this funny in the end, is to see professionals
use Canons number one competitors ( Nikon ) manual lenses on their latest flagship
camera the 5d Mark II for at least aperture control.

Canon is a ground breaking company, and they have done that with the 5D Mark II. However from a professional’s angle, we need those manual features. I’m sure V.2 aka 5D MIII will deliver much more. Overall good start though.

TESTING OUT THE CANON 5D MARK II HD-1080P MODE.

the Canon 5D Mark II. This picture doesn’t do justice to the quality of the camera. The
footage is quite amazing looking considering the impromptu condition it was captured.

THE WAY OF THE FUTURE.

In Scorsese ‘s Aviator; as the film ends Howard Hughes played by DiCaprio mutters
“the way of the future… the way of the future” … I can’t help not muttering that myself
about DSLR-Cinema. If not the exact future, then it’s a glimpse of an amazing road ahead.
For years ever since getting the D60, 10D & Fuji DSLR, I wished that option had been reality. Now my day dreaming of digital cinema ecstasy is starting to hit. When I first got the press release it felt like an hallucination. Just when I think it’s over, then RED counters and takes it to warp speed on steroids with it’s mega super wide camera’s that I have always felt was a great photographic medium. Now it’s moving pictures. WoW! One thing is for sure, I can’t say what’s next. So I’ll just sit back and enjoy this new digital hallucinogenic trip, that’s reality this time……..

THE 3K SCARLET D-CINEMA CAMERA GOT ME THINKING.

Just fun food for thought and obviously this is speculation of course, however
this is going to be reality sooner than later. 2009 is just a little over 8 months off.

With what’s known so far about Reds Scarlet 2/3 cmos 3k camera; how are
the current adapters going to perform with it? Just like people put adapters
on other 2/3 pro cameras to gain that ” look ” , there are going to be people
doing the same with Scarlet. Red code at 3k should be quite clean and very
sensitive to imperfect focus screens etc. How will they hold up?

Will current adapter designers need to seek out better focus screen
designs & technology?

What would be great is Red developing a 35mm adapter; with their
know how and capital they would for sure make one kick a*# unit.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD; 35MM ADAPTER TESTING DELAYED AGAIN…...

So after exhausting research on 35mm-Adapters; nothing good to report.
The plan was to start by spring or earlier summer. So far I am not fully pleased
on my current research. There is possibly hope on one product. However I
will remain tight lipped until I can do more in-depth research on this.

Hopefully when a decision is made this testing will be in-conjunction
with the anamorphic tests that were delayed for 6 months. I can’t wait
to hook up the Nikon lenses as well. There is a line of Nikon cinema
modified lenses that look very promising. Lots to come in the next few months.

The ipod Touch

While on the film set Sunday I noticed someone had an ipod. Yes the new
ipod Touch that is an iphone without the phone. The “touch” is even thinner and
lighter too! Unfortunately there are ipod Touch LCD issues starting to surface on
the internet. So I was going to get one of these since I liked the wifi internet of
the iphone. Not now, it seems that Apple rushed this one out to quickly and
users are reporting black issues with video. Ahhhh, i’ll wait thank you. Let Apple
figure it out, and then get it. That aside, it’s awesome, and internet like
this is what I have wanted for a long time.

still ongoing. So far, everything looks pretty damn amazing to me.
I will have some camera rig photos to show. The Nikkor lenses I
have seen look very good too. A lightning bolt of an idea struck me
